AFP reported on December 7 that the US announced a new security assistance package worth 988 million USD for Ukraine as Washington races to provide aid to Kiev before US President-elect Donald Trump takes office.

In a statement, the Pentagon announced that the aid package includes drones, ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), and equipment and spare parts for artillery systems, tanks and armored vehicles.

The aid will be delivered through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, which will see military equipment purchased from the defense industry or partners rather than drawn from U.S. stockpiles. This means the aid will not arrive on the battlefield immediately.

This aid package follows a similar $725 million package announced on December 2 that provided mines as well as anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons.

The outgoing US administration is working to provide as much aid as possible to Ukraine before Mr Trump takes office.

Mr Trump has repeatedly criticised US aid to Kiev and claimed he could secure a ceasefire within hours.

Trump's comments have raised concerns in Kiev and Europe about the risk of the US ending future aid to Ukraine and Kiev's ability to withstand Russian attacks without further US support.
