On November 12, Secretary General of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Mark Rutte called on Western countries to increase military aid to Ukraine.

The statement was made by the head of NATO while he was visiting Paris.

In another statement the same day as the NATO chief, French President Emmanuel Macron said the European Union (EU) had shied away from its own security burden for too long, calling for strategic autonomy in strengthening defense capabilities.

The French leader warned that the bloc needed to step up its long-term efforts because of the escalation in the current conflict in Ukraine.

In a related development, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken plans to travel to Brussels (Belgium) on November 12 to negotiate with European allies - countries concerned that President-elect Donald Trump may abandon military aid to Ukraine.

In meetings with NATO and EU officials, Blinken will discuss supporting Ukraine's defense capabilities, the US State Department said.
