The death toll from a landslide in Davao de Oro has risen to 54, the Philippine government announced today.
The Maco Town Disaster Prevention Office said at least 32 people were injured. The landslide also affected more than 1,347 households, or more than 5,400 people, in four villages in the town.
A landslide occurred in the town of Maco on the evening of February 6 after several days of continuous rain, burying many houses, vehicles and dozens of people. Rescue teams are racing against time to find 63 missing people as well as possible survivors of the landslide.
According to the World Risk Index 2022, the Philippines ranks first among the world's most disaster-prone countries, with strong storms causing flash floods and landslides frequently occurring in the country.
