There are growing calls in Türkiye to close a controversial gold mine after hopes of rescuing nine workers trapped in a landslide at the open-cast mine faded.
Four people have been arrested, including the manager of the open-pit mine in the remote Ilic district of Erzincan province in eastern Türkiye, officials said. Hundreds of rescuers have been searching for those trapped in the mine, which has been contaminated with cyanide since February 13. An estimated 10 million cubic metres of mud have been dumped into the mine, blocking it.
The Turkish Union of Engineers and Architects has called on the government to immediately close the mine, saying its previous warnings of an impending disaster had gone unheeded. The union is demanding that all those responsible be brought to justice.
Environmental activists fear that cyanide and sulfuric acid used in gold mining there could spill into the Euphrates River, which flows from Türkiye to neighboring Syria and Iraq.
Türkiye's environment ministry said it had blocked the stream flowing from the mine to the Euphrates River, adding that no serious leaks had been detected.
The mine is operated by the privately held Anagold company, which has been mining gold in the area since 2010. Anagold is 80% owned by SSR Mining and 20% by Lidya Mining.
Landslides and mining accidents have been frequent in Türkiye in recent decades. In October 2022, a methane explosion at a coal mine in northwestern Türkiye killed 42 people.
