Children are easily bored during summer vacation, so parents often worry about "what to do for them" but forget that letting children sit idle also has benefits.

Child education experts warn that when parents are too eager to create games for their children, they will form a habit of depending on adults' arrangements to the point that when they have a free moment, they will be restless and not know what to do because they are not familiar with it. Gradually, children will not be used to the freedom of choice and creativity.

On the contrary, children need to get used to and understand that boredom is a normal human feeling.

Clinical psychologist Jodi Musoff of the American Academy of Child Psychology says that boredom helps children develop valuable skills, including the ability to tolerate less-than-ideal experiences. Boredom also helps children develop planning strategies, problem-solving skills, flexibility, and organizational skills. Boredom also boosts children’s creativity, self-esteem, and original thinking.

Experts suggest parents do two simple things to make the most of boredom.

Consider your child's summer schedule accordingly.

Children participate in many activities such as extracurricular activities, camping, and sporting events during the summer. Parents should adjust their schedules, so that children have "boring time" and design their own activities. It can be anything like reading stories, playing with toys, drawing, writing. Some things they can do without the help and guidance of their parents. However, children should not be overused with electronic devices during this time. This will help develop their creative minds.

Be careful not to judge your child. Let them do what they like, in their own time. This is a time for their brains to wander and explore. If your child is used to being directed, you can start by giving them a few options, letting them choose, then observing the results or encouraging them to complete their tasks.

Encourage your child’s creativity, as it is the key to beating boredom. Ask your child what they will do first, what materials they will need, and what steps they will take. Parents can teach their children how to plan, helping them develop problem-solving skills along the way.

Give children time to interact with family

Schedule at least one time a week for the family to gather in the same room, where everyone can do what they want on their own but all together. This could include reading, drawing, completing a creative home decorating project you’ve been meaning to do, completing a puzzle, doing a craft. The whole family can also get outside together and enjoy some spontaneous, relaxed outdoor recreation.

Dr. Jodi Musoff advises it is important to help children learn to manage boredom so they can develop independence and feel in control of their own happiness and joy.

Giving your children some alone time will help parents have time to spend with their spouse, instead of focusing on raising their children 24/7. This is also time for parents themselves, helping them enjoy life in a more meaningful way.
