Citizen Lab representatives said that while testing Apple devices, the organization discovered a vulnerability in the device that was exploited to infect it with NSO's Pegasus spyware.
On September 7, researchers at the digital surveillance organization Citizen Lab said they had discovered spyware related to the Israeli company NSO, exploiting a newly discovered vulnerability in Apple devices.
In a statement, Citizen Lab said that while examining the Apple device of an employee working for a Washington-based civil society group, the organization discovered a vulnerability in the device that was exploited to infect it with NSO's Pegasus spyware.
However, Citizen Lab did not provide details about the individuals or organizations affected.
The watchdog agency highlighted a vulnerability that allows spyware to infiltrate iPhones running the latest version of iOS (16.6). Accordingly, Citizen Lab urged users to update their devices to the new version.
For its part, an Apple spokesperson said Apple has rolled out new updates on its devices after investigating the vulnerabilities flagged by Citizen Lab.
NSO has not commented on Citizen Lab's information.
Since 2021, the US government has blacklisted NSO for multiple violations, including spying on government officials and journalists.
