Speaking on television on October 11, Prime Minister Mikati said the Lebanese Foreign Ministry will ask the UN Security Council to issue a resolution calling for "an immediate and complete ceasefire."

Mr. Mikati affirmed the Lebanese Government's commitment to comply with Resolution 1701, adopted in 2006, to support the Lebanese army in keeping the southern border area with Israel free of weapons or armed forces other than those of the Lebanese Government.

He also said Hezbollah had agreed to deploy troops on the border with Israel as part of the ceasefire.

Hezbollah has informed the Lebanese government that it has accepted a ceasefire with Israel on September 27, the same day its leader Hassan Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike, a source familiar with the matter said.

Hezbollah has previously said it would only accept a ceasefire if there was also a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Hezbollah is now preparing for a protracted war in southern Lebanon after suffering heavy losses from Israeli air strikes.

The force has appointed a new military commander to coordinate rocket attacks and ground operations so it can respond effectively despite the disruption caused by Israeli attacks.
