Vietnam's No. 1 chess player Le Quang Liem stopped at round 3 of the 2023 Chess World Cup when he lost to former world champion Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukraine) in the rapid chess play-off.

After drawing two standard chess games, Le Quang Liem (elo 2,740) and former world champion Ruslan Ponomariov (Ukraine, elo 2,664) must settle the score in a play-off at the 2023 Chess World Cup.

In the first game of the rapid chess play-off (25 minutes plus 10 seconds for each move), Le Quang Liem, holding the black pieces (going last), drew against Ruslan Ponomariov after 52 moves. In the next game, the two players continued to shake hands and draw as the match reached its end.

With this result, Le Quang Liem and former world champion Ruslan Ponomariov had to play two more rapid chess games with a time limit of 10 minutes plus 10 seconds for each move. In the first game, Quang Liem had the advantage of holding the white pieces (going first) but unfortunately lost to his opponent after 57 moves.

Stopping in the third round of the 2023 Chess World Cup, Le Quang Liem received a prize of 10,000 USD.
