Judge Merchan has set a new date for sentencing of former President Donald Trump, which is November 26, three weeks after the US presidential election, unless the case is dismissed before that date.
On September 6, US New York State Judge Juan Merchan decided to postpone the sentencing hearing for former President Donald Trump in the hush money case until after the US presidential election later this year.
Judge Merchan stated that the trial will be rescheduled for November 26, three weeks after the US presidential election (November 5), unless the case is dismissed before that date.
The decision was made to avoid the possibility - however unfounded - that the proceedings were affected or could affect the upcoming presidential election in which defendant Trump is the candidate representing the Republican Party.
Thus, the sentencing hearing for Mr. Trump in connection with the case of falsifying business records to pay hush money to actress Stormy Daniels as well as interfering in the 2016 US presidential election will not take place as planned on September 18.
In a post on the social network Truth Social on September 6, former President Trump appreciated Judge Merchan's decision and said that this case needed to be legally ended, as the United States was preparing for the most important election in history.
Previously, Mr. Trump's lawyers filed a petition with a New York court requesting to postpone the sentencing hearing until after the 2024 presidential election, claiming that there was a motive for election interference. The person who made the accusations against Mr. Trump was Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a member of the Democratic Party.
