Speaking to reporters, Baalbek Mayor Bashir Khader said at least one civilian was killed and many others were injured after Israel carried out four attacks on the city of Baalbek in eastern Lebanon.

Security sources said one of the attacks hit the southern entrance to Baalbek, at least 2 kilometers from the ancient Roman ruins. Three other attacks were near the city of Taraya, 20 kilometers west of Baalbek.

A Lebanese security source said Israeli attacks had mainly targeted Lebanon's southern border area, although in recent weeks they had extended further north.

Tensions along the Lebanon-Israel border have escalated since the start of the Hamas-Israel conflict, with Israel and the Hezbollah Islamist movement exchanging artillery and rocket attacks on an almost daily basis. Clashes between Hezbollah and the Israeli army have left more than 340 people dead on the Lebanese side, including about 230 Hezbollah fighters and more than 60 civilians, according to security sources.
