South Korea's Jeju Island Tourism Authority confirmed today that 38 out of 90 Vietnamese tourists who arrived on the island on a charter flight on November 14 suddenly lost contact and disappeared at the last scheduled attraction on November 17.

The group of tourists arrived in Jeju from Nha Trang under a visa exemption program, part of the island's local tourism development law. The program allows foreigners from 64 countries, including Vietnam, to stay on Jeju Island for up to 30 days without a visa.

After 38 tourists failed to board the return flight, the travel agency that brought the Vietnamese group to Jeju failed to report to authorities within the required 14 days, the Jeju Island tourism agency said.

Jeju Immigration Service is extracting images from security cameras to search for the group of tourists, who will be considered illegal residents after December 14, when their 30-day visa-free stay expires.
