On May 16, the Republican-controlled US House of Representatives voted to pass a bill to force President Joe Biden to cancel his decision to suspend arms aid to Israel.

The bill, called the Israel Security Assistance Support Act, passed the House of Representatives by a vote of 224-187, with 13 lawmakers abstaining. The vote included 16 Democrats. The bill would prevent President Biden from freezing any military aid to Israel that has been approved by Congress.

The House of Representatives pushed the bill after President Biden recently decided to delay the delivery of weapons to Israel, including high-explosive bombs, over concerns that the weapons could be used in a major attack on the southern Gaza Strip city of Rafah. President Biden has urged Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu not to launch a ground offensive on Rafah without protecting civilians.

Republicans say President Biden has no authority to intervene in Israel's military campaign, while House Democratic leaders describe the bill as an infringement on the president's ability to conduct foreign policy.

However, the bill is expected to have no chance of becoming law because it is difficult to pass the Senate currently controlled by the Democratic Party and President Biden has declared that he will veto the bill in any case.
