Playing with death

Ms. Hoa was picking tomatoes in the field near the dike when a villager passed by and called out:

- Hey, your family is still there picking tomatoes. Go home now, your husband fell while crossing the railway. I heard he was not wearing a helmet and his face was scratched. People took him to the medical station to bandage it and then sent him home. As for his motorbike, it was run over by a train and can't be repaired.

Ms. Hoa exclaimed in panic:

- Oh my god. How miserable I am. My husband and children told me to do it but I didn't listen. And the motorbike I just got yesterday didn't even have a license plate.

The village woman comforted:

- Well, as long as there are people, there is property. You should go home and see what's going on.

Ms. Hoa obeyed, hurriedly packed the tomatoes into bags, and hurriedly cycled home. Seeing many relatives and neighbors coming to ask questions, the husband's face was covered in bandages:

- Honey! Are you okay? Is it affecting your bones?

Hearing his wife say that, Mr. Thong tried to hold back his pain:

- I'm fine. The doctor said luckily I only have superficial scratches. The scratches on my face are from not wearing a helmet when I fell.

Hearing her husband say that, Ms. Hoa lamented:

- Look at that, everyone. This morning before I took the motorbike out, my wife told me to wear a helmet, but I didn't listen. On top of that, she argued with me, saying I was only going around the village and commune, not going anywhere far, so I didn't need a helmet or a hat. And then there's the newly bought motorbike. The police told me not to let it circulate while I was waiting for the license plate, but I didn't listen. Now people are injured. The motorbike I bought with money I saved up from raising fish for years is now scrap metal. Isn't that miserable?

Mr. Bao witnessed the whole incident and took Mr. Thong home and told:

- I still shudder when I think back to that time. How could it be that the train was about to pass, the railway staff had already pulled down the barrier, but Thong still tried to weave his way across. When they saw him slip and fall on the tracks, everyone was panicking and screaming. I and a few others rushed to pull him out, but the train came and threw the motorbike away. Luckily, there was only property damage, and he only suffered minor injuries. Well, let's just say that property was lost in place of a life...

Hearing that, an elderly neighbor shook his head in dismay:

- Everyone knows that when going out on the street, they must obey the law. Yet there are still many people like Mr. Thong here who ignore the law. No wonder accidents still happen so often. If adults do not set an example, how can they teach the young, right everyone?

Mr. Thong felt regretful, his hand wiped the blood still oozing from his forehead:

- I know I was wrong. The police have made a report of the violations and asked me to come back in a few days to resolve them. After this incident, I dare not play with death anymore...
