The attack occurred on September 1 when a convoy of four vehicles belonging to the TSM Mining Group was transporting gold from a mine near the Kimbi River in the Fizi region of South Kivu province.

The attackers stole bags of gold from the vehicle. Among the four people killed were two Chinese nationals, a Congolese soldier and the driver. Three others were injured in the attack, including a Chinese worker.

Authorities said the attackers were locals from the nearby Maniema area.

China is a major investor in the Democratic Republic of Congo, especially in the mining sector. Meanwhile, South Kivu province has been regularly hit by attacks by armed groups. Tensions have recently risen between local residents and Chinese mining companies.

On August 29, officials in the Democratic Republic of Congo announced that at least 14 people were killed in an attack carried out by Codeco rebels in the Shaba mining area, Aru region, Ituri province, in the northeast of the country.
