Characteristics of mothers who raise successful daughters

A study by the University of Essex (UK) surveyed 15,500 girls aged 13-14 from 2004-2010 and found that girls with "tough, high-standard mothers" were more likely to go to university and earn higher salaries.

The researchers also found that girls with strict mothers were “less likely to become teenage mothers.” The study found that parents with high expectations were 4% less likely to have a teen pregnancy than parents with average expectations.

Pregnant teens are more likely to leave school early and earn less than others, even if they have jobs. They also face the situation of forming relationships with men who are less educated and more likely to be unemployed, the report said.

Ericka Rascon-Ramirez, the study’s author, points out that in many cases, we stubbornly pursue what we believe is good and right for us, even when it goes against our parents’ wishes. However, no matter how hard we try to avoid our parents’ advice, chances are we’ll eventually look back at what they say and take it to heart.
