One eye cannot see clearly and must undergo regular dialysis. These are the pains that Nguyen Thi Dung, 29 years old, in Huu Chung village, Ha Thanh commune (Tu Ky, Hai Duong) has to endure due to complications of diabetes.
Ms. Dung is being treated at Hai Duong General Hospital. Ms. Bui Thi Rich (68 years old), Ms. Dung's mother, said that more than 2 weeks ago, Ms. Dung was tormented by excruciating stomach pain. Her family took her to the Provincial General Hospital. The doctors advised the family to transfer her to a higher level. At Bach Mai Hospital, the doctors concluded that Ms. Dung's diabetes had become severe and required dialysis. Also due to difficult circumstances, she requested to be transferred to the Provincial General Hospital for treatment.
Ms. Dung has had diabetes since she was 16 years old. At that time, she was in 11th grade. While she was in school, she fainted many times. After that, Ms. Dung went to the hospital once a month for treatment. She thought she would "live with" this disease peacefully, but for more than a year now, her condition has become worse. She often had to be hospitalized with severe abdominal pain due to cholecystitis and gastritis. Most recently, she had to undergo dialysis. Every week, she had to undergo dialysis up to 3 times to hope to maintain her life.
Since Dung fell ill, the family's situation has become even more difficult. The family's only source of income is 5 sao of rice and a pair of cows. Mrs. Rich said: "When our daughter went to the hospital, even though we were in difficulty, we still had to eat vegetables and porridge as long as we had enough money to take care of our daughter. The money we had saved for many years was only enough for a few months in the hospital. Now the amount of money we borrowed to take care of our daughter's hospitalization has reached over 100 million VND."
During the days when Mrs. Rich took Dung to the hospital, the old house, which was already damaged in many places, became even more desolate. All the housework was done by Mr. Nguyen Van Truong (77 years old), her father. Mr. Truong said: "Because I feel sorry for my sick daughter, I took advantage of my free time to find extra work to earn some money. We have two children, one is sick and the other is also in difficult circumstances, so I can't help much."
Ms. Pham Duy Ta, Chairman of the Red Cross Society of Ha Thanh commune, said that Ms. Dung's family has been a poor household in the locality for many years. Since Ms. Dung got sick, life has become even more difficult. The locality has visited, encouraged and donated to support Ms. Dung's family, but it is not much. Through this, she also hopes that benefactors will join hands to help Ms. Dung's family overcome difficulties. Any help can be sent to Ms. Nguyen Thi Dung, Huu Chung village, Ha Thanh commune, Tu Ky district, phone: 0384234721 or transferred to the Red Cross Society of Tu Ky district, account number 2312201001930 Agribank Tu Ky branch (clearly stating support for Ms. Dung).
