What is the basis for Hai Duong sports to set a target of returning to the top 10?

In its 33-year history, from the first National Sports Congress in 1985 to the 8th Congress in 2018, Hai Duong has always maintained its position in the top 10 provinces, cities and sectors with the strongest sports movements in Vietnam. However, at the 9th Congress in 2022, for the first time, Hai Duong was knocked out of the top 10, losing to the team ranked above by exactly 1 gold medal. This is not a very happy event, but it is also an opportunity for Hai Duong's high-performance sports people to re-evaluate their practices, thereby making the right decisions, with the not-so-simple goal of returning to the top 10 at the 10th National Sports Congress in 2026.

According to the project "Building facilities and a force of high-performance athletes and coaches in Hai Duong province to participate in the 10th National Sports Festival in 2026", Hai Duong will compete in 24 events, including 15 key events of type I and 9 key events of type II. The high-performance sports delegation of Hai Duong will have 297 people, including 251 athletes, the rest are foreign and domestic experts and coaches.

The highest goal of Hai Duong sports at this congress is to return to the top 10, winning 25-26 gold medals, 28 silver medals, and 33 bronze medals.

According to the Competition Training Department (Hai Duong Sports Training, Coaching and Competition Center), this goal is based on scientific grounds as well as the actual quality of the team of athletes and coaches. In particular, the team of young athletes currently being trained will reach maturity by the time of the Games. At the same time, the current generations of athletes who have become famous in the sports are still capable of winning gold medals at the upcoming Games, such as: Tran Dinh Thang (weightlifting); Bui Van Hoan, Nhu Dinh Nam, Nguyen Huu Thanh (rowing); Pham Hong Quan (canoeing); Le Thi Van, Pham Thi Thu (diving)...

The gold medals that Hai Duong is expected to win at the National Sports Festival in 2 years will still be based on traditional strengths such as: Shooting, archery, athletics, weightlifting, diving, fencing, pencak, Wushu, 2 boat racing events (canoeing, rowing). In addition, Hai Duong is focusing on investing in a number of new events with development potential including: Traditional boat racing (dragon boat), Aerobics, and shuttlecock kicking. Previously, at the 2024 National Traditional Boat Racing Championship on Nhat Le River (Quang Binh) in April this year, the Hai Duong traditional boat racing team won 2 gold medals and 2 bronze medals.

Hai Duong has a tradition and rich achievements in sports, even always ranking above localities with much stronger economic potential. For many years, Hai Duong has owned a team of experienced coaches and a team of athletes with many achievements in domestic and international competitions that many other units always roll out the red carpet to invite.

Hai Duong province currently has 558 athletes in 28 sports receiving centralized training, including 189 national and international level athletes (including 4 international masters, 72 masters, 6 reserve masters, 107 level I athletes). The coaching team of 52 people, most of whom have been professionally trained in sports universities, have a sense of responsibility, capacity, experience, and passion for their careers. At the 9th National Sports Congress in 2022, the Hai Duong provincial sports delegation, including 55 domestic and foreign coaches and experts and 240 athletes, participated in 19 events, won 68 medals of all kinds, including: 21 gold medals, 19 silver medals, 28 bronze medals, broke 3 national records, ranked 11th out of 65 provinces, cities and sectors nationwide.

In 2023, Hai Duong athletes participated in 91 national and international competitions, exceeding the planned target with 136 gold medals, 130 silver medals, and 153 bronze medals. Of which, international competitions won 11 gold medals, 9 silver medals, and 11 bronze medals. Notably, at the 32nd SEA Games, 13 athletes and 1 coach from Hai Duong participated in 6 sports, won 7 gold medals, 4 silver medals, and 6 bronze medals, setting 3 new records, contributing to the overall best achievement of Vietnamese sports...
