On January 11, Mr. Sam Altman - CEO of OpenAI (the maker of the ChatGPT platform) met with US House Speaker Mike Johnson on Capitol Hill to discuss the risks posed by artificial intelligence technology.
According to the Office of the Speaker of the House of Representatives, the two sides discussed the potential promise of AI and other technologies and the risks that come with them. Chairman Johnson hopes that the US Congress will encourage innovation and creativity to help maintain America's competitive advantage, but must be cautious about the potential risks that arise from new types of technology.
Speaking to reporters, CEO Altman said he and House Speaker Mike Johnson discussed efforts to balance the huge benefits of AI and the risks involved, as well as ways to mitigate and prevent risks.
The discussion comes amid growing concerns about the risks AI could pose, such as the spread of misinformation and job losses.
The Biden administration has been pushing for bipartisan lawmakers to study and create effective regulations to govern AI, but progress has been slow as both parties in Congress have been unable to agree on the issue.
In October 2023, President Biden signed an executive order requiring technology companies developing AI systems to disclose the results of safety testing of their AI systems to the federal government before releasing and putting them into use. The order aims to enhance safety against risks that AI can pose to US national security, economic activities, and user safety.
Meanwhile, the European Union (EU) has become the first region to establish clear rules on the use and regulation of AI when member states and EU parliamentarians reached a political agreement on the AI Act on December 8, 2023. The act is the world's first comprehensive regulation on AI governance.
