According to technology site the Information, Apple may introduce a foldable iPhone as early as 2026. This move could mark the biggest hardware design improvement for the most popular product of the "Apple".
The plan to release a foldable iPhone comes after Samsung Electronics pioneered the foldable segment with its 2019 product launch, aiming to attract customers with its new hardware design.
Citing two sources familiar with the matter, the Information reported that Apple’s foldable iPhone has progressed from the concept stage. The company has contacted suppliers in Asia to produce components for the device, and Apple has created an internal codename for the product, V68.
Foldable smartphones, which come with artificial intelligence (AI) features, are expected to boost demand for iPhones, which are facing stiff competition from Honor and Huawei in China as well as Samsung in the global market.
Samsung unveiled its latest foldable smartphones in early July, making its most expensive models lighter and thinner with new AI technology.
According to a Counterpoint Research report from May, in the first quarter of 2024, the global foldable phone market grew 49% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, marking the highest increase in six quarters, in which Huawei took the lead for the first time, beating Samsung.
Additionally, the Information said, Apple also plans to upgrade the camera of at least one iPhone model, allowing users to create depth-of-field effects. Apple has not yet made an official comment on the above information.
On July 10, Apple's stock price increased sharply by 1.4%, reaching a market capitalization of nearly 3,600 billion USD. At the closing time of the session, although the price of 1 Apple share decreased slightly to 232 USD, the total capitalization value of this "giant" still reached more than 3,500 billion USD, a record that no other company in the world has achieved.
Apple noted this positive signal after they introduced a new software suite for Apple ecosystem devices and Apple Intelligence tools at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2024.
Apple is having some tough times in early 2024. iPhone sales in China are down sharply and consumers are not showing much interest in the Vision Pro virtual reality glasses.
