Angry because Han Yong Duk did not pay the principal and interest as promised, Jeong In Cheol tricked his friend to come to his house, killed him, dismembered his body, and disposed of the evidence.
On May 19, the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City opened the first instance trial of defendant Jeong In Cheol (38 years old, Korean nationality, residing in District 7, Ho Chi Minh City) for the crimes of "Murder" and "Robbery".
According to the prosecution, in 2010, Jeong In Cheol and his family entered Vietnam and lived as freelancers. In 2018, Jeong In Cheol and his wife founded Creata VN Marketing Company, with the husband as director.
In March 2019, while dining at a restaurant in District 7, Jeong In Cheol met Han Yong Duk.
In April 2020, both of them contributed 1.8 billion VND each to invest in business in An Giang province, but the business was not successful.
On November 14, 2020, Mr. Han Yong Duk came to Jeong In Cheol to borrow 2.7 billion VND for 2 days with an interest rate of 30%. After that, Jeong In Cheol borrowed more money to transfer to Mr. Han Yong Duk.

On November 17, 2020, Mr. Han Yong Duk did not pay the principal and interest as promised and said this amount was deducted from the 1.8 billion VND invested with Jeong In Cheol.
Angered, Jeong In Cheol came up with the idea of arresting him to pressure him into getting his money back.
On November 24, 2020, Jeong In Cheol bought 10 sleeping pills, brought them back to the company, crushed them into powder, and then called Han Yong Duk to a coffee shop in District 7 to discuss debt repayment.
At 5:00 p.m. the same day, knowing that all the employees in the company had gone home, Jeong In Cheol drove Han Yong Duk back to the company, saying that if Han Yong Duk did not pay, he would kill him.
At the company, Jeong In Cheol mixed sleeping pills into a glass of beer and gave it to Han Yong Duk to drink. About 20 minutes later, the man was drugged and lying motionless.
Discovering that Han Yong Duk had died, Jeong In Cheol quickly took the body to the bathroom, used a handsaw and pliers to dismember the victim.
Seeing the two bracelets on the victim's wrist, Jeong In Cheol took them off and looked them up online. He found that one was worth $42,000 and the other was worth $52,000. After committing the crime, he calmly went to sleep.
On November 27, 2020, Jeong In Cheol asked his staff to buy a large suitcase, 30 plastic bags, and 5 rolls of tape. At noon that day, Jeong In Cheol put Han Yong Duk's body parts in the suitcase and plastic bags, and took them to the rooftop to hide.
Next, he asked Seo Hyeong Seok to sell the two bracelets he had stolen from the victim. However, when he brought them to Ben Thanh market, because they did not have any papers, he was only paid 80 million VND. Jeong In Cheol refused to sell them and asked Seo Hyeong Seok to take them home.
Through many incidents, suspecting Jeong In Cheol of killing Han Yong Duk to steal the two bracelets, Seo Hyeong Seok questioned him and Jeong In Cheol admitted to killing Han Yong Duk and then left. Immediately, Seo Hyeong Seok went to the Korean Consulate in Vietnam to report the incident.
At noon on November 28, 2020, the police arrested Jeong In Cheol while he was hiding in his friend's apartment in Masteri Thao Dien apartment building, District 2.
At today's trial, the defendant admitted to committing the crime as charged in the indictment. However, the defendant said that due to the pressure of debt for the money he lent to Mr. Han Yong Duk, but when he asked the victim to pay him back, he threatened to hire gangsters to kill the defendant and his family, so the defendant killed Mr. Han Yong Duk.
Considering that the defendant's actions were dangerous, directly infringing on the lives and property of others, a severe sentence was required for deterrence and prevention. After consideration, the Trial Panel decided to sentence the defendant to death for the crime of "Murder" and 8 years in prison for the crime of "Robbery". The total penalty for both crimes is death.
