Defendant Chu Ba Chung (face covered) and accomplices heard the verdict this morning.

On December 16, Chung, 40 years old; Truong Ngoc Mai; Tran Kim Loan were sentenced to death by the People's Court of Ho Chi Minh City for illegal drug trafficking; Nguyen Vu Khai Hoang also received the highest sentence for illegal drug transportation.

As accomplices of Chung and Mai, two other defendants were sentenced to life in prison; one of them is raising a child under 3 years old.

The trial panel determined that the documents and evidence in the case file, along with the defendants’ testimonies, showed that the defendants had bought, sold, and transported large quantities of drugs for personal gain. The defendants all had mitigating circumstances, but their crimes were extremely serious and therefore needed to be severely punished.

The verdict determined that Chung was born in Vietnam and settled in Canada with his family at the age of 9. In early 2019, he returned to Vietnam and lived in many places, including renting an apartment in Nha Trang.

Chung was hired by a man named Trai (unknown background) to hide drugs and deliver them to buyers in Ho Chi Minh City, with a commission of 100-200 USD per kg sold. He hired Mai to help deliver and hide the drugs. Since the beginning of 2020, Chung has received 5-30 kg of crystal meth, ketamine, ecstasy... from Trai's network from Cambodia, transported them to Saigon, and delivered them to Mai's house for hiding.

On September 15, 2022, Nguyen Vu Khai Hoang received a suitcase of more than 40 kg of drugs from a man named Thach (unknown origin) in the border area of the Central Highlands and brought it to Ho Chi Minh City to deliver to Mai and Chung. On the same day, Chung directed Mai to deliver it to a number of people.

On September 16, 2022, Mai packed nearly 12 kg into 3 cardboard boxes to deliver in District 5, but was discovered and arrested by Ho Chi Minh City Police, Tan Binh District and District 5. Searching the residences of those involved, the authorities seized a total of more than 100 kg of drugs. The prosecution determined that Chung and Mai must bear criminal responsibility for these drugs.

There are a number of people involved in the case whose backgrounds have not been identified, so the investigation agency has no basis for handling them.

During the trial, the other defendants admitted to all of their crimes. Chung said he was not the mastermind who directed his accomplices to commit the crimes. Because he owed money, Trai confiscated his identity papers, threatened him, and forced him to deliver drugs.
