The two spice crops onion and garlic are currently occupying the number 1 position in terms of winter crop area planted in Hai Duong.
According to the latest statistics of the provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, this winter crop, Hai Duong has planted 6,706 hectares of onions and garlic, an increase of 214 hectares over the same period in 2023 and accounting for 30.4% of the total area of winter vegetables planted (22,032 hectares).
In the structure of winter crops grown, no vegetable crop surpasses the above two spices in terms of area. Following onions and garlic are currently cabbage, kohlrabi, and cauliflower. The total area of these three crops combined is only 4,229 hectares.
Onions and garlic are grown in all 12 districts, towns and cities, but the most are in Kinh Mon town (3,995 ha), Nam Sach (1,614 ha), Chi Linh city (315 ha)...
According to research, for many years now, onions and garlic have been identified as one of the main crops in the province's winter crop structure. These two types of spices are suitable for natural conditions and are easy to care for. Onions and garlic are easy to dry, dry, and can be preserved for a long time. They are also indispensable spices in family meals, so they are easy to sell.
Since the onions have just started to form bulbs, farmers in the province have been able to prune the branches and sell them to traders at a price of 7,000-10,000 VND/kg. A quantity of bulbs/clumps will be kept for harvesting at the end of the year. When harvested, beautiful onion leaves (also known as onion stalks) are still purchased by traders to supply to instant noodle spice processing factories.
Compared to other crops, onions and garlic often keep their prices more stable. On average, farmers earn a profit of 8-9 million VND/sao.
Thanks to the development of science and technology, the output and value of onions and garlic in Hai Duong are increasing. In 2023, the output of onions and garlic in Kinh Mon alone reached 66,925 tons, an increase of 768 tons compared to 2022, with revenue reaching 1,500 billion VND (average 393.5 million VND/ha).
Since 2017, Kinh Mon onions and garlic have been honored as "Golden Brand of Vietnamese Agriculture".
Enterprises and facilities processing onions and garlic are increasingly being established. Hai Duong onions and garlic now not only have a place in the domestic market but have also been processed into many other products for export, increasing their value. Some products such as garlic syrup, garlic wine, garlic wine, black garlic... have been exported to France, Switzerland, Germany, and the Czech Republic.
