After a child was beaten during a summer retreat at Cu Da Pagoda, Thanh Oai District (Hanoi) inspected and requested a temporary suspension of the retreats.
Regulations for the 2023 summer retreat at Cu Da Pagoda
Regarding the incident in which a parent in Hanoi reported that her child, after attending a summer retreat at Cu Da Pagoda (Cu Khe Commune, Thanh Oai District, Hanoi), was beaten by a friend to the point of having to go to the hospital for examination, on the morning of June 17, the People's Committee of Thanh Oai District sent a working group to the pagoda to inspect and verify the incident.
At noon the same day, a leader of the People's Committee of Cu Khe commune said that after the inspection, the working group requested Cu Da pagoda to clearly report the incident. At the same time, they re-checked all the pagoda's facilities related to the content mentioned in the parent's article.
"For now, we have asked the pagoda to stop organizing the retreats. Then we will report to the District People's Committee. If they allow the retreats, we will rectify them. If not, we will stop them completely," the leader informed.
Regarding the facilities, after the inspection, this person said that they were "basically guaranteed", the space was clean, airy and separated for men and women; there were fans in the rooms, some rooms had air conditioning.
"Water is also guaranteed, but there have been times in the past few days when the water has been cut off, this is unavoidable" - this person added.
However, on the morning of June 17, the facilities at Cu Da Pagoda were quite rudimentary. The horizontal house at the pagoda was also used as a place for children to stay.
Some volunteers who participated in supporting the retreat said that there were times when they had to sleep on stone benches and on the stage to make room for the children.
The number of children participating in the retreat was too large, causing overload. Although we constantly reminded and assisted the children with bathing, washing clothes, playing... we still could not avoid mistakes.
Regarding the incident of a child participating in a retreat being beaten but the temple did not inform the parents, the leader of Cu Khe commune said that according to the report from the temple, the child only said that he fell after getting into a fight with a friend, but did not specify that he was beaten by his friend.
"At 10:30 a.m. on June 15, a child had a sore arm and went to the medical department of Cu Da Pagoda for a check-up. Immediately after that, the pagoda also took the child to Ha Dong District General Hospital for an X-ray and the doctor concluded that there was no broken bone, only soft tissue swelling and pain," he added.
Previously, Mr. Bui Van Sang - Chairman of Thanh Oai District People's Committee - the district had grasped the matter. This morning, the district established a working group to work with the pagoda and told the district Buddhist Association to inspect and report to the district.
He also noted that parents should not send their children to summer retreats following the "trend" and should carefully research information before making a decision to avoid unfortunate consequences.
Abbot of Cu Da Pagoda: Will inform when there is an official conclusion At noon on June 17, the abbot of Cu Da Pagoda said that the pagoda is working with local authorities to clarify the matter. When there is an official conclusion, the pagoda will inform. The upcoming summer retreats will temporarily stop. As previously reported, a parent of NNG in Hanoi posted on social media about her child attending a summer retreat at Cu Da Pagoda. According to the report, after 5 days of taking her child to the retreat at Cu Da Pagoda, when she came to pick up her child, she was shocked to see her child in a state of dirty, smelly clothes and body, with mosquito bites all over his limbs. "After asking, I found out that the temple is very crowded, and after I shower, the water runs out so I can't shower. The temporary toilet is often clogged and the toilet is so dirty that I don't dare to use it. I sleep on the ground with a mat, and on rainy and windy days, it's humid and full of mosquitoes, so I can't sleep. In the afternoon of the same day, I discovered that my child's left arm was swollen at the elbow and his hand was cuffed. When I asked him, he told me the truth that he had a fight at the temple and was hit hard on the head and hand with a wooden chair by his friend, but the staff told him not to say he was beaten but that he fell down. If he did not listen, he would be punished by kneeling for 2 hours" - the content of the article stated by Ms. G. Ms. Thu - head of the summer retreat organizing committee - said that the children attending the retreat are at an active age, so it is inevitable that they will fight with each other. In the case of the child who fell, on the day of the fall, he complained of pain in his arm, so the organizers took him to Ha Dong General Hospital for examination. All results showed no bone damage. |
