The first quarter-finals of EURO 2024 will be determined halfway through the round of 16.
The first two matches of the EURO 2024 quarter-finals have been decided. The teams that have advanced to the round of 16 so far are Germany, Switzerland, England and Spain.
According to the knockout round bracket, England will face Switzerland at Merkul Spiel Arena, Dusseldorf at 11pm on July 6. Before that, the quarter-finals will open with the match between Spain and Germany at MHP Stadium, Stuttgart at 11pm on July 5.
To reach the quarter-finals, Switzerland beat Italy 2-0. This was the first surprise of the round of 16.
Italy are the reigning runners-up. However, Switzerland were the better team. They controlled the game, had more shots and, most importantly, twice found the net against Gianluigi Donnarumma with goals from Remo Freuler and Ruben Vargas.
Switzerland's opponent is England. The team nicknamed "Three Lions" continued to show lackluster play when facing Slovakia in the round of 16.
England fell behind early on. They were stuck in the game and needed a late Jude Bellingham strike to take the game into extra time. Harry Kane sealed a 2-1 win with a close-range header.
England's draw is very favorable. If they get past Switzerland, their semi-final opponents will be one of the four teams: Romania, Netherlands, Austria, Türkiye.
Germany quickly advanced through the group stage after the first two matches. In the round of 16, Julian Nagelsmann's team showed their mettle by defeating Denmark 2-0.
Meanwhile, Spain won all their group matches. In the round of 16, La Roja easily defeated Georgia 4-1. Spain's only loss was an own goal by defender Robin Le Normand.
The confrontations between Spain and Germany are always very attractive. The last time the two teams met was at the 2022 World Cup. Both sides played with dedication but were inconclusive after 90 minutes.
The winner of the match between Germany and Spain will face one of the four teams France, Belgium, Portugal, Slovenia in the semi-finals.
