Venezuela's Supreme Court has fined TikTok - the globally popular video-sharing platform - $10 million for its involvement in viral challenges that led to the deaths of three teenagers and the poisoning of 200 schoolchildren in the country.

Judge Tania D'Amelio said TikTok had "lacked responsibility to take necessary and appropriate measures" to prevent the spread of content encouraging participation in these dangerous challenges.

According to the ruling, TikTok must open an office in Venezuela and has eight days to pay the fine or face "appropriate" measures.

The fine will be used to establish a "TikTok Victim Support Fund" to compensate for psychological, emotional and physical damage to those affected, especially children and adolescents.

Dangerous TikTok challenges are behind the deaths of three teenagers and 200 cases of poisoning in schools in Venezuela.

These challenges often encourage users to engage in actions such as drinking or being exposed to toxic chemicals, which are dangerous to health and life.

TikTok - owned by Chinese company ByteDance - has been repeatedly criticized for allowing dangerous challenge videos to spread.

TikTok's operating policies prohibit content that promotes self-harm or suicide, but the Venezuela incident shows the platform's failure to control content.

Last month, President Nicolas Maduro warned TikTok would face "severe measures" if it did not remove content related to what he called a "criminal challenge."

He also said Venezuela's National Assembly is considering new laws to regulate social media, aimed at preventing "incitement to hatred, discrimination and division".

For its part, TikTok said the platform is "aware of the seriousness of the issue" and is committed to cooperating with authorities.

However, this incident raises big questions about the responsibility of social media platforms in controlling content and protecting users, especially children and teenagers - who are vulnerable to dangerous trends.
