U23 Vietnam has only 2 players in the typical squad of the 2022 Southeast Asian U23 tournament

Despite winning the Southeast Asian U23 Championship, Vietnam U23 only had two players in the tournament's best squad voted by Goal Asia magazine: center-back Tran Quang Thinh and full-back Nguyen Thanh Nhan.

The voting results of Goal Asia inevitably caused controversy after the typical lineup of the 2022 U23 Southeast Asian tournament was announced on social networks. Because a series of outstanding players who helped U23 Vietnam win the championship such as goalkeeper Dang Tuan Hung, midfielder Dung Quang Nho or midfielder Tran Bao Toan were all "ignored".

Goal Asia's explanation that the U23 Vietnam squad was disrupted too much due to players contracting Covid-19 and having to add 10 replacements also proved unconvincing. Because Dang Tuan Hung, Tran Bao Toan and Dung Quang Nho all played 2-3 matches in the 4-match journey of U23 Vietnam.

Meanwhile, the host U23 Cambodia was eliminated in the group stage but still had 2 players selected: goalkeeper Hul Kim Huy and midfielder Sovannmakara. Similarly, U23 Philippines was also eliminated early but midfielder Sandro Reyes was selected in the typical squad.

The loser of U23 Vietnam in the final match, U23 Thailand, contributed the most players to this squad with center back Chonnapat Buaphan, full back Thawatchai Inprakhon and striker Teeresak Poeiphimai.
