This morning, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) announced 34 names called up to the U17 team to prepare for the Asian tournament, including overseas Vietnamese player Thomas Mai Veeren.
Thomas Mai Veeren was born in 2008, his Vietnamese name is Mai Cong Thanh, his father is Dutch, his mother is Vietnamese. Thomas belongs to Quick Club in the Dutch fourth division (Derde Divisie, level 2/11 in the Dutch amateur system), but does not play for the first team but the youth team.
Thomas plays in midfield. According to VFF statistics in the 2023/24 season, the Dutch player of Vietnamese origin has played 8 matches, scored 9 goals and had 4 assists, including 1 hat-trick, but it is not clear in which tournament.
Thomas has had the opportunity to train with professional clubs such as ADO Den Haag and Feyenoord Rotterdam, as well as being part of the Dutch Football Federation's Under-13 teams from 2018 - 2023.
The core of the Vietnam U17 team is mainly players who passed the qualifying round last year. These are all names that were previously called up by coach Cristiano Roland.
In addition, coach Roland also gave opportunities to many new players to increase competitiveness in the team.
Before leaving for the U17 Asian Cup (April 3-20 in Saudi Arabia), Coach Roland will shortlist the players. The most deserving players will be on the official list of U17 Vietnam to compete in Saudi Arabia.
