More than 4,000 people have been evacuated from the towns of Cohasset and Forest Ranch and 400 from the small city of Chico, Northern California (USA), due to a large and rapidly spreading forest fire.

The Park Fire, which began on July 24 near Chico, in Butte County, had already ravaged a large area and neighboring Tehama County in just a few hours. In just two days, the Park Fire had become the 20th largest fire in California history by land area and the most intense wildfire to hit the state this summer, following a brutal heat wave.

As of the night of July 26, 97,000 hectares of forest had burned, 134 structures had been destroyed and the fire continued to rage. The fire has created a huge column of thick gray smoke, with dust clouds resembling those of a violent storm, which can now be seen from neighboring states.

Speaking at a press conference, fire chief Billy See said: "This fire has spread rapidly from 1,600 to 2,000 hectares per hour."

The fire is currently out of control, despite the efforts of about 1,700 firefighters, according to Cal Fire, California's fire department. Fire departments from across the state have sent crews to help.

“This fire is challenging our strategies, but we are looking for opportunities to deploy our resources in ways that can control the fire,” Butte County Fire Chief Garrett Sjolund told reporters.

The state's weather service has issued a red alert for the area, predicting "severe" weather conditions that could fuel fires.

Earlier on July 25, police arrested a 42-year-old man on suspicion of starting the fire by pushing a burning car down a ravine. Prosecutors identified the man as Ronnie Dean Stout II and said he would be held without bail until his next court appearance next week.

California is entering what is expected to be a fierce wildfire season, with 20 fires currently burning. Meanwhile, communities to the north in Washington and Oregon are also threatened by 40 wildfires. Neighboring Canada has also seen a series of wildfires, including a massive blaze that has destroyed much of the tourist town of Jasper in western Alberta.
