Total retail sales of goods increased thanks to trade and tourism activities.

According to data released by the General Statistics Office, total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue in August 2023 is estimated at VND 515.4 trillion, up 0.9% over the previous month.

The General Statistics Office pointed out that the increase in total retail sales of goods was due to the increase in goods for the new school year and August being the last summer month of the year, also the end of summer vacation for students, so tourism and outdoor activities were more bustling.

In the first 8 months of 2023, total retail sales of goods and consumer service revenue at current prices are estimated at VND 4,043.9 trillion, up 10% over the same period last year, and excluding price factors, up 7.7%.

Retail sales of goods in the first 8 months of 2023 are estimated at VND 3,175.5 trillion, accounting for 78.5% of the total and increasing by 8.7% over the same period last year (excluding the price factor, which increased by 7.4%); of which, food and foodstuffs increased by 12.1%; cultural and educational items increased by 11%; garments increased by 8.7%; household appliances, tools and equipment increased by 4.4%; means of transport (excluding cars) increased by 0.5%.

In the first 8 months of 2023, some localities had increased retail sales of goods such as: Quang Ninh increased by 11.8%; Hai Phong and Can Tho both increased by 9.5%; Binh Duong increased by 9.4%; Dong Nai increased by 8.2%; Hanoi increased by 6%; Ho Chi Minh City increased by 4.8%; Da Nang increased by 3.1% over the same period last year.

Revenue from accommodation and catering services in the past 8 months is estimated at VND436.3 trillion, accounting for 10.8% of the total and increasing by 15.6% over the same period last year. Accordingly, revenue in the first 8 months of 2023 of some localities is as follows: Da Nang increased by 40.3%; Can Tho increased by 27.2%; Dong Nai increased by 23.6%; Ho Chi Minh City increased by 23.4%; Quang Ninh increased by 21.8%; Hai Phong increased by 14.4%; Hanoi increased by 11.9% over the same period last year.

A bright spot in the month is that tourism revenue in the first 8 months of 2023 is estimated at VND 22.4 trillion, accounting for 0.6% of the total and increasing by 47% over the same period last year due to high tourism demand during the peak season and localities have also actively implemented many activities to stimulate tourism after a long period of being affected by the Covid-19 epidemic.

Therefore, localities with developed tourism services with quite high revenue growth in the first 8 months of 2023 are: Da Nang increased by 97.5%; Khanh Hoa increased by 93.4%; Ho Chi Minh City and Quang Ninh both increased by 57.6%; Hai Phong increased by 57%; Hanoi increased by 45.9%; Binh Thuan increased by 40.2%; Can Tho increased by 15.6%; Lam Dong increased by 11.5% over the same period last year.

Revenue from other services in the first 8 months of 2023 is estimated at VND 409.7 trillion, accounting for 10.1% of total retail sales and increasing by 12.6% over the same period last year. Specifically, the increase and decrease in the first 8 months of 2023 of some localities are as follows: Da Nang increased by 19.8%; Bac Giang increased by 17.5%; Ba Ria - Vung Tau increased by 11.8%; Can Tho increased by 9.4%; Hanoi increased by 8.7%; Hai Phong increased by 6.2%; Ho Chi Minh City decreased by 2.7%; Quang Binh decreased by 0.6% over the same period last year.

The leader of the Ministry of Industry and Trade said that in recent times, the domestic market has continued to be a support for production and supply of essential goods for the people and has been well received by the people. Therefore, the domestic market has still grown at a double-digit rate.

Identifying the domestic market as one of the important factors promoting the country's GDP growth, in order to develop the domestic market in the coming time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade will focus on effectively implementing domestic market trade promotion programs, promoting the distribution of goods through digital platforms and e-commerce to expand domestic consumption.

Along with that, the organization promotes the effective implementation of the Domestic Trade Development Strategy for the period up to 2030, with a vision to 2045, and Programs and projects on domestic trade development; Innovates methods, integrates trade promotion activities to develop the domestic market into consumer stimulus programs, initiatives to connect supply and demand of goods, and effectively implements market stabilization programs.
