On July 19, the Thai Constitutional Court ordered the temporary suspension of the parliamentary status of prime ministerial candidate Pita Limjaroenrat.
Thailand's March Forward Party (MFP) leader Pita Limjaroenrat speaks to the press in Bangkok on July 17, 2023.
The Constitutional Court's decision to suspend the election comes as parliament debates whether Pita is eligible to be re-nominated as prime minister in a July 19 vote. The court said in a statement that Pita has 15 days to respond. The leader of the party that won the most seats in the election had previously said that his ownership of a media company did not violate election rules.
In the July 14 vote, Mr. Pita was the only candidate nominated for prime minister, but he did not win the 376 votes needed to be elected. According to the rules, a prime minister candidate will be elected if he wins the majority of support from both houses of the Thai National Assembly or at least 376 votes. Mr. Pita then announced that he would withdraw from the prime minister position if both houses of the National Assembly did not approve him in the next vote.
