Authorities in the Democratic Republic of Congo are searching for more than 100 people believed missing after a shipwreck in the western part of the African country, media in the country reported on August 20.
According to authorities, the incident occurred at around 7pm on August 18 local time, when the boat was traveling on the Lukenie River in Mai-Ndombe province when it crashed into wooden blocks on the riverbed. At that time, there were about 300 people on board.
Officials said the death toll was not yet known. Only a few dozen people were lucky enough to survive, while rescuers found the bodies of some victims.
The head of Mai-Ndombe province, Mr. Nkoso Kevani Lebon, expressed shock at the incident and pledged to conduct an investigation to clarify the matter.
In June, a boat sank on another river in the same province, killing at least 86 people, including 21 children.
