Fox News host Pete Hegseth (left) interviews Donald Trump, then President of the United States, in Washington on April 6, 2017.

First to testify was Pete Hegseth, the nominee for secretary of defense. During the hearing, which lasted more than four hours, Democrats pressed Hegseth on multiple allegations of misconduct, as well as his views on women in combat and his ability to lead a vital department with 3 million employees and an $849 billion budget.

Hegseth has claimed he is the victim of a “smear campaign.” But he has won the support of Republicans after weeks of scrutiny over his ability and qualifications to lead the Pentagon. A vote by the full Senate could come as early as next week.

Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate and nominations require only a simple majority, meaning most of President-elect Trump's picks would be easily confirmed soon after he takes office next week.

Republican senators are looking to confirm the President-elect's Cabinet as quickly as possible, before Mr Trump's inauguration on January 20 and the start of his agenda.
