Consumer rights group Facua criticized the ruling to suspend the Telegram app as disproportionate, warning it would cause "enormous harm" to millions of users.
Spanish judge Santiago Pedraz on March 23 ordered the suspension of Telegram in a lawsuit filed by television stations alleging that the online messaging service violates intellectual property rights.
However, the ruling has been criticised by consumer groups.
Judge Santiago Pedraz ordered a “temporary suspension” of Telegram’s resources. The order was issued on March 22, but as of noon local time on March 23, the platform was still operating in Spain.
On the same day, consumer rights group Facua criticized the ruling as disproportionate, warning that it would cause "enormous harm" to millions of users of the messaging platform.
According to Facua, the media companies involved in the above lawsuit are Mediaset, Atresmedia, Movistar and Egeda.
Telegram is an encrypted messaging platform that allows users to set up private channels to broadcast content.
