At exactly 8 o'clock, Phan Tuan Anh took his Super Cub motorbike with a basket of bird of paradise flowers, and walked with his family more than 200 meters to his lover Pham Huong's family to ask for her hand in marriage.

Behind Tuan Anh, all members of the groom's party also wore clothes in the fashion style of the 1980s-1990s. The male tray bearers wore pants with Y-shaped straps and white shirts.

When the groom's party arrived, the music played. "Dream Wedding" sounded. The female team receiving the trays, wearing ao dai with "peacock blanket" motifs, stood waiting at the gate. The guests were also told in advance to wear old-fashioned costumes.

The engagement ceremony of Tuan Anh and Pham Huong, which recreated the atmosphere of the subsidy period on November 2, made Buon Ma Thuot City residents very excited and curious. The couple's images were also widely shared on many social networking forums.

Groom Tuan Anh, 32 years old, from Ha Tinh, said that he and his wife came up with the idea of organizing this old-style engagement ceremony after seeing the wedding photos of their aunts and uncles. They were especially impressed with the unique features such as the wedding ceremony with a gate made of coconut leaves, the private space decorated with banana flowers, birds of paradise, gladiolus, and a red fabric backdrop with patterns.

"My wife's parents had a group wedding following the new lifestyle in 1983. The ceremony was simple, no food, just cake and tea. Guests gave the bride and groom household items such as a cage, rice cooker, pan, basin, etc.", Tuan Anh said.

After agreeing on the script, Tuan Anh and his girlfriend spent a month hunting for old-fashioned clothes for both families as well as decorations such as curtains, peacock-patterned curtains, and antique tables and chairs.

"I went to my relatives to borrow more old-fashioned clothes, and borrowed tables and chairs from the bride's neighbors," the groom said. Many old, antique items such as speakers, televisions, teapots, and cups were not available for purchase, so they had to be borrowed from a friend's coffee shop.

After more than 10 days, they completed the decoration at the bride's house.

The bride's parents (left) were emotional at their daughter's engagement.

During the ceremony that day, instead of having an MC, the bride and groom and the two families sat drinking tea and talking. After the procedures of the representatives of the two families, relatives from both sides came to give wedding gifts. To keep the style of an old wedding, Tuan Anh and the bride's friends took turns giving the family items such as Rang Dong thermos, cassette player, and old film camera.

Mrs. Nguyen Thi Hong, 65 years old, the bride's mother cried when she saw her daughter wearing a red ao dai, a veil and the curly hairstyle she had done at her own wedding. "At first, I was a bit worried because I was afraid of the ceremony and the simple clothes, but after the ceremony was over, both families were happy because it was a memorable event," said Mrs. Hong.

To preserve the memories of his big day, Tuan Anh asked his friend to take pictures with a film camera. The 32-year-old man said that he and his wife both like old, nostalgic color photos. Although taking pictures with film will have some good and some bad, some blurry and some sharp due to the shooting technique, they both accept it.

This year, in addition to holding weddings in Ha Tinh and Dak Lak, Tuan Anh and his wife will also hold a private wedding party with a few friends of both in Da Lat. The dress code for the ceremony is planned to follow the fashion style of the 90s.

"My wife and I met in Da Lat and decided to get married after three months of long-distance relationships with a total of three meetings. I wanted to hold a special engagement and wedding to preserve this dream love story," Tuan Anh said.
