Francois Bayrou was appointed Prime Minister of France on December 13, 2024.

According to a VNA correspondent in Paris, the priority of Mr. Bayrou, a close ally of Mr. Macron, will be the 2025 budget issue. The opposition of the 2025 budget bill by the National Assembly led to the collapse of the government of former Prime Minister Michel Barnier. The new head of the Matignon Palace will also face other urgent documents on his desk, including an agreement not to hold a vote of no confidence, a task that requires consultation from parties from the left to the right, except for the National Rally (RN) and the France Unbowed (LFI). In addition, he will also have to pay attention to priorities such as pension reform and immigration. Mr. Bayrou is expected to announce the list of ministers in his cabinet in the coming days.

According to analysts, he is likely to face similar difficulties to Mr Barnier.
France’s simmering political turmoil has raised doubts about whether Mr Macron will complete his second term as president, which ends in 2027. It has also raised France’s borrowing costs and is expected to leave a power vacuum in central Europe, just as US President-elect Donald Trump prepares to return to the White House.

After Mr Barnier's government failed to survive a vote of no confidence, Mr Macron launched talks with leaders of different parties to find consensus to form a "government of the national interest" and avoid a prolonged political crisis.
