Speaking to the press, President Mulino said he had a phone call with US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on February 5, expressing his surprise and rejection of the US State Department's statement. He also asked the Panamanian Ambassador in Washington to officially refute the statement of the host country's Foreign Ministry.

The Panamanian leader also rejected US President Donald Trump's accusation that China is controlling the Panama Canal Authority (ACP). He also said he would meet with US President Donald Trump on February 7 to clarify the issue surrounding the Panama Canal.

Previously, on social network X, the US State Department announced: "The Government of Panama has agreed to not charge fees for US Government ships transiting the Panama Canal". ACP has denied this statement, affirming that there are no changes related to fees or rights to transit the Panama Canal.

Also on February 6, Panamanian President Mulino announced that Panama had officially withdrawn from China's Belt and Road infrastructure initiative (BRI). Mulino said that the Panamanian Embassy in Beijing had notified China 90 days in advance as required by regulations of its decision not to renew its participation in the initiative. However, the Panamanian President affirmed that the Central American country would not sever diplomatic relations with China.
