"Susie is tough, smart, creative, and admired and respected by all," President-elect Donald Trump said on November 7, referring to his campaign manager, Susie Wiles. "Susie will continue to work tirelessly to make America great again. It is an honor to have Susie as the first female White House chief of staff in American history."

The White House chief of staff is typically the first position announced by the president-elect, and is responsible for overseeing all day-to-day White House policies and operations. The position does not require Senate confirmation.

Wiles, 67, is one of Mr Trump's most senior advisers. She and Chris LaCivita were his campaign managers and have been described as the "brains" behind the president-elect's victory. Both Wiles and LaCivita rarely appear in public.

"I want to express my deep gratitude to Susie and Chris, the job that you guys do. Come here, Susie," Trump said in his victory speech in Florida in the early hours of November 6, shortly after his election. "Susie likes to stand in the back, but I'll tell you what, we call her the 'Ice Lady.'"

Wiles began her political career in 1979 as an assistant to Republican congressman Jack Kemp. A year later, she joined the campaign that elected Ronald Reagan the 40th president of the United States.

She is a Republican strategist in Florida who managed Mr. Trump’s campaign in the state in 2016 and 2020. Before that, she was in charge of Rick Scott’s 2010 Florida gubernatorial campaign and former Utah governor Jon Huntsman’s 2012 presidential campaign.

During his first term in office from 2017 to 2021, Trump appointed four White House chiefs of staff, Reince Priebus, John Kelly, Mick Mulvaney and Mark Meadows. Of these, one was fired via Twitter, two are now critical of Trump and Meadows was indicted on charges related to trying to overturn the 2020 election results.
