Snowstorms and freezing winter weather are sweeping across many areas of the United States, causing particular damage in the eastern part of the country.

At least 30 people have died in severe weather-related incidents across the United States, with most of the deaths centered around the Buffalo area on the edge of Lake Erie in western New York state, according to NBC News.

The number of confirmed deaths in the Buffalo area rose to 12 on December 25, up from three the day before, Reuters quoted Mark Poloncarz, Erie County executive, as saying. The latest victims included some found in cars and some in snowbanks, Poloncarz said.

Despite a driving ban in place since December 23, hundreds of drivers in Erie County were stranded in their cars over the weekend. Rescue efforts by the National Guard were hampered by heavy snowfall and fierce winds. Local officials warned that the death toll could rise.

“In some areas, being outdoors can lead to frostbite within minutes,” the National Weather Service (NWS) warned. The NWS recommends that anyone traveling or going outdoors “prepare for extreme cold by dressing in layers, covering as much exposed skin as possible, and carrying a winter safety kit in your vehicle.”

New York Governor Kathy Hochul told reporters that President Joe Biden's administration had agreed to her request for a federal disaster declaration. About 200 National Guard members have been mobilized in western New York to assist police and fire departments with relief efforts, conduct health checks and bring supplies to residents.

Across the US, winter storm Elliott has knocked out power to about 1.5 million people, with hundreds of thousands more advised to reduce both electricity and gas use.

More than 1,700 flights were canceled on December 25 and thousands more were delayed due to the weekend snowstorm, according to tracking site FlightAware.
