Federal and California officials are investigating whether the envelopes contained toxic substances. California officials have also asked local election offices to take precautions to ensure that mail sent to the state’s election offices is processed promptly. Previously, envelopes containing suspicious substances, including the painkiller fentanyl, were sent to election offices in Georgia, Oregon, and Washington.

On the same day, Georgia state officials said they had been warned that suspicious envelopes had been sent to state election offices.

According to ABC News (USA), the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) are examining an envelope containing a suspicious substance. This envelope was sent to the Texas Attorney General's office.

The disturbing incidents occurred days after local elections in several states and less than 10 weeks before the first primary election in Iowa, which will fire the "starting shot" of the 2024 election season. The primary is the stage of voting within parties for voters to choose their party's presidential candidate to run for the White House.
