Under the influence of the first tropical depression of the year, Ho Chi Minh City and the South experienced the biggest unseasonal rain in 20 years, causing deep flooding in many places.
Early morning of February 13, many places in Ho Chi Minh City and the southern provinces such as Binh Duong, Ba Ria - Vung Tau, Dong Nai experienced rain with thunder and lightning. The rain lasted for 4-5 hours, causing many areas to be deeply flooded.
In Long Thanh and Nhon Trach districts (Dong Nai), water flooded into boarding houses, causing many people to lose sleep and struggle to arrange furniture to avoid water damage.
At 7am, the sky in Ho Chi Minh City was gloomy, some districts such as Go Vap, 7, 12, Binh Thanh, Nha Be still had light rain.
Mr. Le Dinh Quyet, Head of Forecast Department of Southern Hydrometeorological Station, said that the amount of rain measured as of 6:00 a.m. today in Long Thanh (Dong Nai) was more than 126 mm, and in Nha Be district it was 124 mm.
According to Mr. Quyet, unseasonal rain of over 100 mm is very rare, never happened in Ho Chi Minh City and the South in the past 20 years. The cause is the influence of low pressure causing air disturbances causing heavy rain.
Statistics show that in the past 20 years (2005 - 2025), Ho Chi Minh City has had 12 years of rain in February. This morning's rain was nearly double the amount of the heavy rain in 2006. Yesterday, heavy rain for 3 hours flooded some streets in Binh Thanh District, District 7... People had to struggle to move and clean up trash to avoid clogging the drainage system. The rain in the city and southern provinces will last until the end of this week.
