Mongolia's National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) said that up to 20 out of 21 provinces and cities in the country are experiencing extremely cold winter.
According to NEMA, a total of 166 districts in 20 provinces and cities in the country are experiencing cold weather, with the ground frozen or covered in snow, causing many livestock and poultry to die. Specifically, about 90% of Mongolia's area is covered in snow, up to 37 cm thick.
Due to extreme weather, the country's livestock and poultry population is expected to be only 64.7 million (by the end of 2023), down 9.1% from the previous year.
Mongolia's climate is strongly continental, with long, icy winters and short summers. Last December, nighttime temperatures in some parts of the country dropped to minus 50 degrees Celsius.
