Man Utd have today announced the sacking of manager Erik ten Hag, nearly two years before his contract expires.
"Ten Hag has left his position as Man Utd men's coach," the club said in a statement on its website. "Ten Hag was appointed in April 2022 and has won two domestic trophies, the 2023 League Cup and the 2024 FA Cup. We are grateful to Ten Hag for everything he has done for the club and wish him well for the future. Ruud van Nistelrooy will take over as manager, along with his coaching staff, while the club searches for a new manager."
Man Utd's announcement was 87 words long, meaning that only Ten Hag was fired, while his assistants would continue to work with the team. The club's leadership informed the Dutch coach of the decision this morning, October 28, Manchester time. The announcement was posted early in the afternoon.
According to British newspaperGuardian, billionaire Jim Ratcliffe, the club's largest individual shareholder, made the final decision after discussions with the club's leadership. Ten Hag's old contract with the team expires in the summer of 2026, so the "Red Devils" may have to pay a compensation fee to terminate the contract with the 54-year-old coach.
