On August 28, the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) unanimously agreed to extend the mandate of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) for one year. The decision was made amid escalating tensions between Hezbollah and Israel in the border area.

UNIFIL was established in 1978 with more than 10,000 troops, and is tasked with patrolling Lebanon's southern border with Israel. UNIFIL's current mandate ends on August 31 this year. In a resolution unanimously adopted by the Security Council on August 28, the body "decides to extend the current mandate of UNIFIL until August 31, 2025." The Security Council also calls on all parties concerned to immediately implement measures to de-escalate tensions, including exercising restraint and restoring calm around the Green Line - a demarcation line designated by the UN in 2000.

The resolution also reiterated the Security Council's "strong support" for "full respect for the Blue Line and complete cessation of hostilities."

The vote came just days after one of the fiercest clashes in 10 months between Lebanon's Hezbollah and the Israeli military, with international concerns that the conflict between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip could spread tensions across the region.
