Getting ready for the 10th grade entrance exam according to the old program

In the 2023-2024 school year, the province will have about 28,700 ninth graders. Right from the beginning of the school year, schools have reviewed and surveyed to assess and classify students, from which they have educational plans, assigning experienced teachers to teach, focusing on three key subjects: math, literature and English.

This school year, Lien Hong Secondary School (Hai Duong City) has 206 ninth graders. Right from the beginning of the school year, the school has reviewed the eighth grade learning results and conducted surveys to classify students, dividing them into 5 extra classes. The school selects experienced and competent teachers who have followed students since eighth grade to continue teaching in ninth grade. After receiving the first semester assessment results, the school continues to classify and transfer extra classes suitable for each group of students.

Mr. Nguyen Dinh Tu, Principal of Lien Hong Secondary School, said that the school had organized an early assessment and learned from the previous school year's exam preparation experience to propose appropriate solutions to improve the quality of the 10th grade entrance exam. Math, literature, and English are the three subjects that the school focuses on in building a teaching and review plan for students. Each teacher has organized separate review sessions for each student; increased testing and evaluation of students in each class, and supplemented weak students.

In the 2023-2024 school year, Ho Chi Minh Secondary School (Tu Ky) has 113 9th grade students. From the beginning of the school year, the school has organized student assessment and classification. Through the survey, the school has about 75% of students planning to take the 10th grade high school entrance exam, the rest will be admitted to the Center for Vocational Education - Continuing Education.

Mr. Nguyen Khac Diep, Principal of Ho Chi Minh Secondary School, said that in addition to focusing on directing the professional team to improve the overall quality and study all subjects equally, in November 2023, the cluster of 7 secondary schools organized a joint survey. The inter-school cluster will organize 2 more joint surveys in April and May 2024. The school will organize the final joint survey in May 2024.

The entrance exam for grade 10 high school always attracts the attention of society. In order to best complete the final exam according to the old program, not only schools but also the Departments of Education and Training have proactively taken measures to improve the quality of teaching and training for students.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Quang, Deputy Head of the Department of Education and Training of Tu Ky district, said that the task of improving the quality and achievements of admission to grade 10 high school has been implemented early in schools. Building a review program framework for the three subjects of math, literature and English for teachers to refer to. Actively organizing seminars and professional workshops on innovative teaching methods, improving the quality of admission to grade 10, innovating testing, especially in the stages of making questions and evaluating students. Strengthening professional activities in clusters of schools to evaluate the level of schools and create a competitive atmosphere for teachers and students.

Hope to have enrollment plan soon

Like many parents whose children are taking the 10th grade entrance exam this year, Mr. Tran Van Phong in Hai Duong City said that the education sector needs to come up with an exam plan soon. Keeping the three subjects of math, literature, and English stable is the most appropriate, because this is the group of students who have been directly affected for 3 consecutive years by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Ms. Phung Thi Minh Dam, a literature teacher at Lien Hong Secondary School, said that although there is no exam plan yet, teachers are closely following the exam structure of the three subjects of math, literature and English in recent years to review for students. Ms. Dam also hopes to soon have instructions, exam plans and exam subjects so that teachers and students can be proactive.

Mr. Quang also suggested that Hai Duong soon announce the enrollment plan for grade 10 in the 2024-2025 school year in an effective, streamlined, and pressure-reducing direction.

Up to now, some localities have announced the entrance exam plan for grade 10 high school such as Hung Yen, Dong Nai, Ho Chi Minh City and all choose 3 subjects: math, literature and foreign language.

According to Mr. Do Duy Hung, Deputy Director of the Department of Education and Training of Hai Duong, math and literature are still the two key subjects, the third exam subject will be calculated appropriately, avoiding disruption and reducing the burden on students. Around March 2024, the entrance exam plan for grade 10 of high school for the 2024-2025 school year will be announced. Schools must organize teaching and learning for all subjects. Families should coordinate with schools and teachers to properly assess the abilities of their children to have appropriate orientation for their children.
