The life and career of the great physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac is a shining example of work, study, creativity, medical ethics, intelligence, humanity and dedication.
On the evening of December 27, at Thanh Sen Square (Ha Tinh City), Ha Tinh province coordinated with the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, Hung Yen province, and the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO to solemnly organize the 300th anniversary of the birth of the great physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac (1724 - 2024).
Attending the program were Politburo members: Tran Thanh Man, Chairman of the National Assembly; Nguyen Trong Nghia, Secretary of the Party Central Committee, Head of the Central Propaganda Department; Nguyen Xuan Thang, Director of the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics, Chairman of the Central Theoretical Council; former Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Uong Chu Luu; leaders of ministries, departments, branches, agencies and central units; leaders of the provinces: Bac Ninh, Ninh Binh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Binh, Quang Tri, Thua Thien Hue, Binh Dinh; and many researchers and scientists across the country.
On the side of Hung Yen province, there was Provincial Party Secretary Nguyen Huu Nghia.
On the side of Ha Tinh province, there were Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Hoang Trung Dung, Standing Deputy Secretary of the Provincial Party Committee Tran The Dung, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Vo Trong Hai; members of the Provincial Party Committee Standing Committee; former leaders of the province through the periods; leaders of departments, branches, localities and a large number of people of the province.
The opening speech of the ceremony was presented by Ha Tinh Provincial Party Secretary Hoang Trung Dung, affirming that the life and career of the great physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac is a shining example of work, study, creativity, medical ethics, intelligence, humanity and dedication.
He left behind lasting values, contributing to the glory of traditional medicine and spreading the cultural values and Vietnamese people to international friends. The book "Hai Thuong Y Tong Tam Linh" is considered an "encyclopedia", carrying universal values of humanity, clearly demonstrating great values of culture, education, anthropology, summarizing ethical standards; is an oath, motto, and guideline for the noble mission of a physician.
Besides his achievements in medicine, Hai Thuong Lan Ong was also a great writer, poet, thinker and scientist. His work "Thuong Kinh Ky Su" written during his time in Thang Long citadel to treat the royal family in 1782 is considered a valuable document on medicine, culture and history; reflecting a true and vivid picture of contemporary Vietnamese society.
Provincial Party Secretary Hoang Trung Dung also emphasized that the government and people of Ha Tinh are very honored and proud to be assigned by the Central Government to preside over and coordinate with relevant localities and ministries to organize the 300th anniversary of the birth of the Great Physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac and receive the certificate of special national monument ranking for the tomb and memorial site of the Great Physician.
The event of UNESCO honoring, the Prime Minister ranking the tomb and memorial area in Huong Son district as a special national monument and the 300th anniversary of the birth of the great physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong is an affirmation of his stature and influence in the fields of medicine, education, culture and society globally.
Honored to be the hometown of the Great Physician, the Party Committee and people of Ha Tinh and Hung Yen provinces have united, made efforts, and achieved comprehensive results in all fields. Following the tradition of previous generations, in the coming time, the Party Committee and people of the two provinces are determined to make efforts to build more provisions, confidently entering a new stage of development.
The Party Committee, government and people of Ha Tinh and Hung Yen provinces hope to continue receiving attention and support from the Central Government, and coordination from localities and international organizations so that the two provinces' economies and societies can develop further; and heritages can continue to be nurtured, spread and enrich the Vietnamese cultural treasure.
Sending congratulations via clip to the leaders of the Party, State of Vietnam, the government and people of Ha Tinh on this important event, Mr. Jonathan Wallace Baker - Chief Representative of UNESCO Office in Vietnam affirmed that Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac is an outstanding physician, the founder of Vietnamese traditional medicine.
His contributions to medicine, culture, and folklore have left an indelible mark in Vietnam and the world. His medical philosophy, rooted in the principles of charity, respect for dignity, and the benefit of the patient, has had a great influence on medical practice in the Vietnamese community and around the world, serving as a guiding compass for medical professionals.
The Chief Representative of the UNESCO Office in Vietnam emphasized that UNESCO's decision to honor Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac is a testament to the long-term influence and universal value of his contributions; a recognition of Vietnam's rich cultural heritage, as well as Vietnam's important contributions to knowledge and traditional values around the world. He hoped that the Party, the State of Vietnam, and the authorities of Ha Tinh and Hung Yen provinces would continue to promote the value of Hai Thuong Lan Ong's achievements so that the legacy of the great physician would continue to inspire and educate future generations, guiding the next generation in their pursuit of knowledge, health, and solidarity.
Next, Permanent Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu, Chairman of the Vietnam National Commission for UNESCO, presented the UNESCO resolution honoring the Great Physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac to the leaders of Ha Tinh province.
Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Hoang Dao Cuong awarded the certificate of ranking the tomb and memorial site of Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac as a special national monument to Ha Tinh province.
After the ceremony is a special art program with the theme "A hundred years and a thousand years of Hai Thuong Lan Ong", including 3 chapters: "The fate of the medical profession", "Dedicated to building a career" and "A vast kite"; performed in the form of a scene using folk melodies of Vi and Giam, mixed with commentary and songs, focusing on recreating the life, career, talent and outstanding personality of Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac.
The special art program is directed by the Provincial Party Committee and Provincial People's Committee; the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism directs the art; writer Duc Ban writes the literary script; playwright Vu Hai is in charge of the overall script and direction; musician Ho Trong Tuan is in charge of the music; and the chief choreographer is People's Artist Huu Tu.
The art program features performances by famous singers and artists such as: Tung Duong, Duc Tuan, Tan Nhan, Vu Thang Loi, Minh Ngoc, Thanh Tai; Meritorious Artist Minh Thong portrays the image of Hai Thuong Lan Ong.
In addition, there is also the participation of the collective of actors from the Vietnam Dance Academy, Ha Tinh Traditional Arts Theater, Hung Yen Cheo Theater, Military Region 5 Art Troupe, Mai Trang Dance Troupe, Sac Viet Dance Group, Ha Tinh University...
The ceremony ended with a fireworks display to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the birth of the famous physician Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac. Accordingly, 500 high-altitude fireworks and 90 low-altitude fireworks were launched intertwined to create an effect in the sky of Ha Tinh.
Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac, also known as Le Huu Huan, was born on December 27, 1724 in Lieu Xa commune, Yen My district (Hung Yen). His father was Doctor Le Huu Muu, who served as a mandarin with the position of Right Deputy Minister of Public Works; after his death, he was granted the title of Minister. His mother was Mrs. Bui Thi Thuong, from Quang Diem commune - Huong Son district (Ha Tinh).
As a child, Le Huu Trac was famous for his intelligence. He studied history and then joined the army with the ambition of using his talent to serve the royal court. However, due to the chaos of feudal society during the Le - Trinh period, he decided to leave Thang Long citadel to return to his mother's hometown in Huong Son.
With his love for humanity and profound wisdom, he spent more than 40 years in his motherland to research, study, summarize experiences, and improve the theories of medical ethics, medical theory, medical techniques and Vietnamese pharmacy, bringing Vietnamese medicine on par with world medicine.
Along with writing books, treating illnesses, and saving people, he opened a training school and established a medical association to connect physicians. Hai Thuong Lan Ong's compassion, talent, and timeless thoughts spread to the capital city of Thang Long.
In the year of Nham Dan 1782, Lord Trinh summoned him to the palace to treat the royal family. During his stay in the capital, he completed the work "Thuong Kinh Ky Su". The work clearly portrayed the portrait of a noble personality, indifferent to fame and fortune, all for the sake of human life of the great physician.
Hai Thuong Lan Ong Le Huu Trac passed away on the 15th day of the first lunar month of the year Tan Hoi 1791, at the age of 67. His life and career are a shining example of medical ethics, intelligence and dedication, leaving behind lasting values, contributing to the glory of traditional medicine and spreading the cultural values and Vietnamese people to friends around the world.
