Coach Kim Sang-sik eliminated 7 players, including goalkeeper Dang Van Lam and striker Nguyen Dinh Bac, to finalize 26 names to participate in the 2024 AFF Cup.
The other five players eliminated were midfielders Nguyen Van Truong, Nguyen Thai Son, Tran Bao Toan, Phan Van Duc and striker Nguyen Quoc Viet.
Dang Van Lam suffered a calf injury during training and unfortunately missed the match. Accordingly, goalkeeper Nguyen Filip will almost certainly keep his starting position, alongside Nguyen Dinh Trieu and 21-year-old goalkeeper Tran Trung Kien.
Meanwhile, midfielders Nguyen Van Truong, Nguyen Thai Son, strikers Nguyen Quoc Viet and Nguyen Dinh Bac are expected to be absent from the tournament list, as they are in the group that has played at least three practice matches in Korea. In the case of Tran Bao Toan and Phan Van Duc, it is believed that they do not meet the physical requirements.
The team finished their 10-day training trip in Korea and returned home on December 3. The team moved to Phu Tho to practice, as they had registered Viet Tri Stadium as their home stadium in the group stage.
Tomorrow, December 6, the team will travel to Laos to prepare for the opening match. Before each match, the head coach will register 23 players to compete.
The AFF Cup will be renamed the ASEAN Cup from 2024, and will be held from December 8, 2024 to January 5, 2025. The 10 teams will be divided into two groups, playing two home and two away matches, with the top two teams and the second-placed teams advancing to the semi-finals. From this round, the matches will be played in two legs, home and away, but the away goals rule will not be taken into account.
After 14 AFF Cups, Thailand leads with seven championships (1996, 2000, 2002, 2014, 2016, 2020, 2022). Following are Singapore (1998, 2004, 2007, 2012), Vietnam (2008, 2018) and Malaysia (2010).
