Coach Tata Martino decided to part ways with Inter Miami after more than a year of association.
According to the newspaperTyC SportsOn November 20, Martino will resign for personal reasons. It is expected that in two days, the 62-year-old coach and Club co-President Jorge Mas will hold a press conference about this decision.
Martino has led Inter Miami since June 2023, helping the club rise from the bottom of the table and then quench its title thirst with the 2023 Leagues Cup and the 2024 Supporters' Shield. He also helped Inter Miami set a record of 74 points in the 2024 Supporters' Shield season, surpassing the old record of 73 points set by New England Revolution.
On November 9, Martino and his players closed out the 2024 season with a 3-2 loss to Atlanta United in the first round of the MLS Cup. After that match, he said that Inter Miami had had an unsuccessful season. "There were good things, there were bad things," the Argentine coach said. "Clearly the team has improved compared to last year. But if we consider the expectations of MLS Cup, we failed."
The new season will begin at the end of February 2025 and Inter Miami has three months to find a new coach.
Before joining the Chase, Martino won the 2013-14 Spanish Super Cup with Barca, the MLS Cup with Atlanta United and the Gold Cup with Mexico. The Argentine coach also guided Paraguay and Argentina to three Copa America finals.
Inter Miami was founded in 2018 by former football stars David Beckham and Jorge Mas. Thanks to coach Martino, Messi, Sergio Busquets, Luis Suarez and many other players, the club won two titles and increased its market value to $1.03 billion.
The Supporters' Shield also qualifies Miami for the inaugural edition of the FIFA Club World Cup, which will be held in the summer of 2025. The tournament will run for three weeks in the United States, between June and July 2025, at stadiums that are preparing for the 2026 World Cup, which will be co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. Miami's Hard Rock Stadium could host the opening match of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Other clubs in the tournament include 2023 Champions League winners Man City and 2022 and 2024 Champions League winners Real Madrid. The draw and fixtures will take place on December 5, 2024 in Miami.
