Coach Gareth Southgate decided to leave the England team after losing to Spain in the Euro 2024 final, ending 8 years of association.
The Football Association (FA) wants to extend Southgate's contract. However, the 53-year-old coach wants to seek a new challenge.
"Wearing the England shirt and leading the England team is the greatest pride of my life. I have given everything. But the time has come for a change," Southgate shared.
Southgate is the most successful coach in England's history in terms of achievements in major tournaments. In addition to being the runner-up at Euro 2024, he also led the "Three Lions" to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup and the final of Euro 2020.
According toTelegraph, The FA has drawn up a list of candidates to replace Southgate, including prominent names such as Eddie Howe (Newcastle), Graham Potter (formerly coached Brighton, Chelsea) and Thomas Tuchel (formerly coached Bayern, Chelsea).
"England have a lot of talented young players. They can bring home all the titles we expect. I hope everyone will continue to support them," Southgate said.
Southgate has been in charge of England since September 2016. He has previously worked for the FA since 2013 as England Under-21 coach. During his playing career, he played as a defender for England from 1995 to 2004. After retiring from Middlesbrough in 2006, Southgate took over as manager of the club until 2009.
