Students are rude to teachers: Is it because parents are too indulgent?

Does the phenomenon of students being rude to teachers stem from the indulgent education from the family?

Recently, there have been more and more cases of students behaving in a way that is considered disrespectful to teachers, even swearing and arguing with teachers, as happened at Nguyen Chi Thanh High School (Khanh Hoa).

From the perspective of a teacher, teacher Dinh Duc Hien (Hanoi) believes that the phenomenon of students being disrespectful to teachers more or less stems from the indulgent education from the family. When parents satisfy all the demands of their children, it leads to them not realizing their wrongdoings.

“When children are spoiled, they always feel they are right in every situation. When they go to school, they still maintain that attitude in their behavior with friends and teachers,” said Mr. Hien.

According to teacher Dinh Duc Hien, general teachers are facing a lot of pressure in their relationships with students and parents. Meanwhile, Circular 32 of 2020 stipulates that teachers are not allowed to discipline students who violate the rules by criticizing them in front of the school or class.

In addition, the regulation that students are allowed to use cell phones for study purposes or with teacher permission is a loophole, according to Mr. Hien, students can abuse and use their phones for improper purposes.

“For example, the incident that happened at Nguyen Chi Thanh High School, students used their phones to record a conversation between teachers and students, causing public outrage. Thus, teachers not only face pressure from students and parents but also thousands of pairs of eyes on social networks,” Mr. Hien shared.

Faced with that pressure, Mr. Hien said that many teachers have chosen to remain silent and withdrawn, and if there is no policy mechanism to protect teachers, it will lead to many negative consequences.

The case of a female student swearing and calling her teacher "you" has caused a stir in public opinion recently.

Regarding the phenomenon of students being disrespectful to teachers, Master Vu Thu Ha said that without reminders and guidance, it is very likely that students' behaviors of swearing and being disrespectful to teachers will repeat.

Master Vu Thu Ha is also worried that some conflicts between teachers and students, instead of being resolved through discussion, sharing, and guidance, have exploded into conflicts and loud arguments.

“But for students, they are still at school age and are in the process of growing up. Therefore, it is important that teachers guide instead of exploding with their students,” said Ms. Ha.

Psychologist Vu Thu Ha

With many years of experience in school psychology consulting, Master Vu Thu Ha said that in some situations, students intentionally create provocations to make teachers angry. They do not yet imagine what the consequences will be, so if not careful, teachers will fall into a situation of arguing with students.

“After calming down, teachers should talk and share with students sincerely and clearly,” suggests psychologist Vu Thu Ha.

Master Vu Thu Ha also admitted that when dealing with students who violate classroom and school rules, teachers face difficulties and challenges with parents. In some situations, if parents react, teachers will choose to "let go" so as not to affect their work and personal life. If this situation occurs, it will be a pity for teachers, parents and students.

“In education, there must be reflection and exchange between teachers so that parents can see where their children’s education is going wrong. But if teachers “let go” and remain silent, the child will be at a disadvantage and lose opportunities to adjust and correct mistakes,” said psychologist Vu Thu Ha.

Importantly, according to psychologist Vu Thu Ha, teachers must be provided with principles, skills, and methods of positive discipline and classroom management skills. Teachers must understand student psychology as well as know how to control their emotions.
