On August 28, Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital received a 43-year-old female patient, residing in Na Hang district, Tuyen Quang province, with difficulty breathing, fatigue, and many spots on her limbs.necrosis

The family said the patient had thyroid surgery in 2016. After that, she often suffered from hypocalcemia with symptoms of muscle cramps in her arms and legs, weakness, and dizziness. The patient bought calcium to inject into her muscles and limbs.

Injection sites appear red-brown, dark spots, gradually forming scars and necrosis on the hands and feet.

According to doctors, self-injecting calcium into the muscle can cause serious health consequences, with many major risks such as bacteria entering and causing infection, vascular occlusion, tissue necrosis, which can lead to sepsis affecting the patient's life.

In addition, injecting calcium into the muscle does not ensure effective absorption and use of calcium in the body. Doctors recommend that if patients have health problems related to calcium, they should go to a medical facility for examination, consultation and instructions on proper use of the drug.

Calcium injections must be injected intravenously, not intramuscularly or subcutaneously, in the correct dosage and appropriate to the patient's condition. Do not inject or take calcium without a doctor's prescription and instructions.
